If you can come up with ideas for other kinds of things (recipes, hairdos, brain surgery techniques—whatever passion you possess), you can come up with ideas for cartoons.
You don’t have to take one of the courses I teach. Just read this book, carefully, cover to cover (no skimming allowed), and I promise you’ll learn many wonderful ways for dreaming up cartoons.
Okay, maybe you’re thinking: “How can I have a career as a cartoonist when all the newspapers are drying up (many cities which used to have two daily newspapers now have only one), and on top of that, some smaller newspapers can’t afford their own cartoonist, instead using syndicated cartoons (which are normally produced by the same cartoonists manning those coveted newspaper positions).
The magazine markets are even worse. How many publish cartoons? A handful maybe, the most notable being The New Yorker, which publishes single panel cartoons—but what are your chances of getting a cartoon accepted there? I’m no statistician, but I’m guessing one in a million…unless you take drastic measures such as marrying the editor…or having a sixties-style sit-in on the publisher’s steps—wearing nothing but your cartoons taped to your breasts and buttocks. That will likely provide more exposure for your creations than leaving them to wither in the slush pile.

I thought this cartoon would inspire my students to try to draw a cartoon because it looks (deceptively) easy to draw. I want to discuss this one in class as an example of how to create the illusion of distance in a two dimensional drawing.
